Introduction to prestressing steel strands?

Prestressed steel strands are steel wire ropes made by twisting 2, 3, 7, or 19 high-strength steel wires together and then undergoing stress relief (stabilization) treatment. They are suitable for prestressed concrete and similar applications. This article provides a detailed introduction to prestressed steel strands. We hope it will be helpful to you.

The main characteristics of prestressed steel strands are high strength, good relaxation performance, and relatively straight when stretched. The typical tensile strength grade is 1860 MPa, but there are also strength grades such as 1720, 1770, 1960, 2000, and 2100 MPa. This type of steel also has high strength. A very commonly used specification in the Chinese market is a 15.2 mm diameter; 12.7 mm and 15.7 mm are less common. Thicker steel plates are used in mining support structures. Prestressed steel strands are mainly made of cold-drawn high-carbon steel, with a small amount of phosphate and residual lubricant on the surface. When the strength is very high (such as 2300 MPa), alloying elements such as chromium need to be added; high-strength galvanized products can increase the silicon content. Some prestressed steel plates made of carbon steel have coating materials on the surface, such as zinc, zinc-aluminum alloy, epoxy resin, grease, and high-density polyethylene sheaths. Stainless steel can also be used as prestressed steel plate, using high-strength duplex stainless steel.

Prestressed steel strands are mainly used in post-tensioned prestressed concrete and prestressed concrete engineering. Mold-drawn steel strands are mainly used in lifting engineering and also in nuclear power engineering. 19-wire large-diameter steel strands are often used in anchor cables for mine road support. Unbonded prestressed steel strands are commonly used in building floors and some geotechnical anchor cables. Galvanized steel strands are often used in tie rods, inclined cables, and external prestressing engineering of bridges. Epoxy-coated steel wire is similar to galvanized prestressed steel wire and is suitable for projects with high durability requirements.

Prestressed steel strands are made from high-carbon steel wire rods, which are cold-drawn into wires after surface treatment, and then some wires are twisted into strands, and then undergo a stabilization process to eliminate stress. To extend durability, the wires can be plated or coated with metal or non-metal materials, such as galvanizing or epoxy resin. Lines can be drawn on the surface to increase grip with the concrete. Unbonded prestressed steel wire is made from ordinary prestressed steel wire, coated with rust-proof grease or paraffin wax, and then wrapped with high-density polyethylene (HDPE).
