Steel strand manufacturers state that steel strands are steel products composed of multiple twisted wires. The carbon steel appearance can be galvanized, zinc-aluminum alloy coated, aluminum-wrapped, copper-plated, epoxy coated, etc., as needed. Classification by use includes prestressed steel strands, (for electrical use) galvanized steel strands, and stainless steel strands. Among these, prestressed steel strands are referred to as unbonded prestressed steel strands after being coated with anti-corrosion grease or paraffin and then HDPE. The manufacturing process is divided into single-wire manufacturing and strand manufacturing. When making single wires, (cold) drawing technology is used. Depending on the material of the product, it can be high-carbon steel wire rod, stainless steel wire rod, or medium and low-carbon steel wire rod. If galvanizing is required, electroplating or hot-dip galvanizing should be performed on the single wire. In the strand manufacturing process, a stranding machine is used to strand multiple steel wires into a product. Prestressed steel strands also need to undergo continuous stabilization treatment after forming. The final product is generally wound on an I-beam wheel (reel) or finished as reel-less.
Steel strand application
Galvanized steel strands are usually used for messenger wires, guy wires, core wires or strength members, etc. They can also be used as ground wires for overhead power transmission, barrier cables on the sides of roads, or structural cables in building structures. Commonly used prestressed steel strands are uncoated low-relaxation prestressed steel strands, and there are also galvanized ones, often used in bridges, buildings, water conservancy, energy, and geotechnical engineering, etc. Unbonded steel strands or monostrands are often used in floor slabs, foundation engineering, etc.

The design control tension of prestressed steel strand tensioning refers to the tension of the steel strand in front of the anchor clamp after prestressed tensioning. Therefore, when calculating the theoretical elongation of prestressed steel strand tensioning, the distance between the two anchor points of the steel strand should be used as the calculation length of the steel strand. However, during prestressed tensioning, the control tension of the steel strand is controlled at the anchor point of the jack. Therefore, for the convenience of control and calculation, the distance between the two anchor points of the steel strand, plus the working length of the steel strand in the tensioning jack, is generally used as the calculation length of the theoretical elongation of prestressed steel strand tensioning. During prestressed steel strand tensioning, most of the exposed part of the steel strand is wrapped by the anchor and jack, and the tensioning elongation of the steel strand cannot be directly measured on the steel strand. Therefore, only the piston stroke of the tensioning jack can be measured to calculate the tensioning elongation of the steel strand, but the anchor plug retraction during the entire steel strand tensioning process should also be subtracted. The load-carrying capacity of the steel strand should be 4-6 times the total traction force.
