High-Strength Prestressed Steel Strand Classification
According to the number of wires in a single strand, it can be classified into: 2-wire strand, 3-wire strand, 7-wire strand, and 19-wire strand.
According to surface morphology, it can be classified into: smooth steel strand (without coating), indented steel strand, compact steel strand, galvanized prestressed steel strand, epoxy-coated prestressed steel strand, etc.
It can also be classified according to diameter, strength grade, standard, or raw material.
Specifications of High-Strength Prestressed Steel Strand
The specifications in the Chinese market are 15.2mm in diameter, less commonly 12.7mm and 15.7mm; thicker steel strands are used in mine support.
Materials of High-Strength Prestressed Steel Strand
Prestressed steel strands are mainly made of cold-drawn high-carbon steel, with a small amount of phosphate and lubricant residue on the surface.
When the strength is particularly high (such as 2300 MPa), alloying elements such as chromium need to be added; the silicon content can be increased for galvanized high-strength products.
Some carbon steel prestressed steel strands have coating materials on the surface, such as zinc, zinc-aluminum alloy, epoxy resin, grease, and high-density polyethylene sheath.
Stainless steel can also be used to make prestressed steel strands, using high-strength duplex stainless steel.
Applications of High-Strength Prestressed Steel Strand
Prestressed steel strands are mainly used in post-tensioned and pre-tensioned concrete engineering.
Compact steel strands are mainly used in lifting engineering, and also in nuclear power engineering.
Large-diameter 19-wire steel strands are often used for mine roadway support anchors.
Unbonded prestressed steel strands are often used for building floor slabs and some geotechnical anchors.
Galvanized steel strands are often used for bridge tie rods, cables, and external prestressing engineering. Epoxy-coated steel strands have similar uses to galvanized prestressed steel strands and are suitable for projects with high durability requirements.
